World Sanskrit Day is an annual event celebrated to promote the ancient language of Sanskrit. Sanskrit is the oldest language spoken in India and is considered the mother language of many languages. The purpose of this day is to revive this language, promote Sanskrit among the people, and preserve the ancient culture. The day is celebrated every year on the day of Shravan Purnima, the Hindu month of Shravan. Raksha Bandhan is also celebrated on this day of Shravan Poornima known to remember and worship the sages.
Significance
The Significance of World Sanskrit Day is that not only a Language Day but all the ancient literature like Vedas, Upanishads and epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata are written in Sanskrit language. Awareness of Sanskrit can be increased by teaching Sanskrit to today’s new generation, so that ancient knowledge can be preserved. In the context of science and mathematics, mathematical formulas, Ayurveda and astronomy written in Sanskrit can be highlighted.
History
The history of World Sanskrit Day dates back to 1969 when the Government of India started observing this day to promote the study and use of Sanskrit. Many educational institutions, cultural organizations and scholars around the world started participating in such events which include seminars, lectures and cultural programs. This day was chosen to mark the birth anniversary of Sanskrit scholar and grammarian Panini.
Date
World Sanskrit Day is not celebrated according to the Gregorian calendar, instead it is celebrated on the day of Shravan Purnima according to the Hindu calendar which falls in the month of August according to the Gregorian calendar.
