In 1893, a young lawyer travelling in a first class train in South Africa was thrown out of the train at Pietermaritzburg station. This incident of racial discrimination was one that changed the life of a young lawyer and he fought for the equality and freedom of people all his life. That young lawyer was none other than Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar in coastal Gujarat.

Gandhi Ji was an important figure in India’s freedom struggle who brought freedom to India by choosing the path of truth and non-violence. Gandhi Jayanti, October 2 is celebrated every year across the world as International Non-Violence Day, which marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The title of Father of the Nation was given to him by Subhash Chandra Bose, whom we call Bapu. He was a prominent political and spiritual leader who led many movements against the British Empire. Many great leaders of the world considered his ideology as ideal and followed his path.
