National Girl Child Day is celebrated every year on 24 January in India, dedicated to the girl child, the main objective of which is to ensure education, health, employment and gender equality of girl children and to spread awareness among people about the challenges faced by girl children. The Government of India has made many schemes for the protection and empowerment of girl children. Every year the Government of India comes up with a theme on the occasion of Girl Child Day, in which the development of girl children is given priority.
National Girl Child Day was started in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, with a focus on girls’ access to education, health and nutrition, eliminating issues such as gender inequality and female foeticide. Today, the Government of India works on important schemes for girls such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samridhi Yojana and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, which have played a vital role in empowering girls.
