National Handloom Day is a day that encourages the weaver community, for centuries weavers in India have created 100 different styles of fabrics and sarees from different regions, from Banarasi silk sarees to Kanjivaram sarees of Tamil Nadu, which tell a different story. The weaver community is the one who weaves the magic of their hands into threads and their creations tell the stories of India’s heritage. It is a skill passed down from generations which is not just a livelihood but also the cultural identity of India.
The growing trend of machine-made fabrics, new consumer preferences for modern low-cost fashion over traditional handloom products and limited market access have had a huge impact on the demand for handloom products. Keeping this in mind, the Government of India celebrated the first National Handloom Day on 7 August 2015 to improve the economic condition of the skilled weavers and artisans of India under the Swadeshi movement and to promote the use of handloom products across the country.
